Blumberg in the News

David Blumberg, Chief Executive Officer of Blumberg Grain – West Africa, was interviewed this month in Business Today Egypt in an article titled Blumberg Grain Provides Solutions to Egypt's Grain Spoiling Problem. An excerpt follows:

Egypt has a major issue with grain spoiling. Some 40% of grain spoils every year, why?
Egypt regularly faces post-harvest wheat losses of approximately 40% due to spoilage occurring in the traditional, open-air storage facilities currently being used, commonly known as Shouna. This loss is due to depletion by pests, pilferage, rot and inclement weather.

What is the solution that Blumberg Grain provide to this problem? And how much can it reduce the percentage of spoiled grain?
The Shouna Development Project is a unique collaboration between the Ministry of Supply, Ministry of Defense and Blumberg Grain. The first phase of the project will revamp 93 Shouna (of 164 total planned) located across the country with modernized food security warehouses, known as Blumberg Grain Aggregation Centers.

This first phase of the project will enable primary processing of 3. 7 million metric tons of wheat per year across a platform of 3.6 million square feet of storage space.

The project will create one of the world’s largest and most sophisticated integrated food security systems for grain storage.

The Blumberg Grain Aggregation Centers, when properly implemented, can reduce postharvest losses down to 5% or less. The system will support the government in recovering crops lost to post harvest losses, saving Egypt up to an estimated USD 200 million annually.

Blumberg in the News

Blumberg Grain was featured in a CairoScene article this month titled "US TYCOON: USE YOUR LOAF, EGYPT", which proclaims that Egypt's bread crisis could soon be resolved by Blumberg, which is launching a new venture in Egypt to introduce new nationwide storage facilities that are set to prevent spoilage and reduce price volatility. An excerpt follows:

It was Marie Antionette who once said let them eat cake – well now a US business tycoon could soon have Egyptians scoffing some of the best loaf on the planet.

Philip Blumberg, head of Blumberg Capital Partners, has launched the tasty new venture after successive politicians failed to solve the riddle of lowering bread prices despite the relatively high cost of purchasing grain, thanks to the country’s poor credit rating.

He said: "Egypt is the largest importer of wheat in the world, but they have to buy it on the spot market. It’s crazy. The largest wheat buyer in the world is constrained by storage."

Blumberg has now reached a deal with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to build 164 grain-storage facilities designed to prevent spoilage, reduce price volatility and eventually lead to a local commodities exchange.

Blumberg in the News

Blumberg Grain was featured in a CNBC article today titled "The American who wants to save Egypt's bread", which explores the recent activity and advancements of Blumberg Grain in Egypt. An excerpt follows:

The rising price of bread was one reason Hosni Mubarak lost power in Egypt. Food inflation is one reason his replacement, Mohammed Morsi, also lost the job. "Egypt is the largest importer of wheat in the world, but they have to buy it on the spot market," said Philip Blumberg of Blumberg Capital.

That may change.

Blumberg recently reached a deal with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to build 164 grain storage facilities designed to prevent spoilage, reduce price volatility and eventually lead to a local commodities exchange.

"It's crazy," the American investor said. "The largest wheat buyer in the world is constrained by storage."

Blumberg, a Harvard Business School graduate who made his fortune in South Florida real estate, said his family has a history with agriculture, having farmed cotton and pecans in Alabama and tomatoes in Florida. He began to see the buildings he invested in as commodities, too.

"A building is nothing but a bundle of commodities, an assembly of copper, nickel, glass, steel and concrete," his son, David, told Africa Agribusiness.

Philip Blumberg began seeing the need for food security and storage in developing countries, and he decided to create a fund called Blumberg Grain to invest in projects.

Q. Whereare the best investment opportunities in global real estate today? USA, Europe, Asia or Middle East?

Opportunities lie in developments and acquisitions which respond to fundamentals and real end user demand, rather than speculation.

I would look to:
Affordable housing, triple net corporate facility investments, opportunistic acquisitions of heavily discounted but well conceived, located and executed commercial and office developments in developing and emerging markets.

Down the road investment in European economies.

Q. How significant is speaking at the Global Real Estate Summit to you? What are your reasons for taking part?

Having the opportunity to speak and participate in this conference over the past 10 years has been a privilege and very enjoyable experience.

Watching this event grow into one of the preeminent real estate conferences in the world is a remarkable achievement, and a good use of the most precious resource: time.

Amwal Al Ghad En: What is the company's vision over the real estate sector in Egypt even the challenges it facing amid the political turmoil? In addition, what are the market's current demands?

Blumberg: First, my expectations in Egypt it will attract investments as soon as possible because investments in real estate travel very quickly. Secondly, the affordable houses are important and much needed in Egypt, which also the Egyptian government can assist. The housing sector should support the PPP system.

We think there are opportunities in the office-building sector that we can reposition them from the C to A class.

We look to the region of Egypt as it has more jobs; it is a promising market for exports and manufacture, more and above it is the great real estate residential sector for affordable houses.

The companies will not come if they will not see stabilization in Egypt. Therefore, we are looking now for US government support for Egypt

Blumberg Grain in the News

Philip Blumberg and Blumberg Grain were recently featured in an Africa Agriculture Business article titled "Blumberg Grain: Bringing Opportunities to Africa’s Agriculture Market," in which the advantages of the Blumberg Grain storage system are explored, as well as the future of agriculture in Africa. An excerpt follows:

Recently Africa Agribusiness Magazine had the pleasure of speaking with Philip Blumberg, Chairman and CEO of Blumberg Capital, to discuss how their agriculture initiative, Blumberg Grain, can provide innovative solutions to Africa.

Blumberg provides countries and companies with state of the art and comprehensive storage units for post harvest food safety and security. Mass produced in the United States, the lightweight, scalable warehouses use one-third the steel of conventional warehouses, making them the most cost effective storage facilities in todays market. However, the simple design does not hinder the structures expected lifespans, which is estimated at 25-50 years.

Furthermore, each self-contained facility can be customized for farmers needs. "Despite their simple design, these warehouses are quite sophisticated. Its what we can do inside that makes all the difference," said Philip Blumberg.

By design, Blumberg warehouses can be divided for multiple products, and each area can have its own sophisticated temperature, insulation and humidity controls. To operate the facilities, countries may choose from generator, solar or wind power. Whats more, Blumberg structures are designed to work in rural areas, close to the farmers and their crops, so that harvested crops are stored as quickly as possible. The units also serve as large distribution and collection facilities.

After the modules are shipped to the host country, assembly begins. One key advantage is that these warehouse buildings can be installed and working in as little as 3 days. Blumberg works directly to train the local workforce to assemble and run the facilities. "We are committed to hiring the majority of employees from the local job market," says Mr. Blumberg.

Blumberg in the News

Business Today Egypt published a Q&A with Philip Blumberg, chairman and CEO of the Blumberg Capital Partners group of companies and chairman of the firm's investment committee. An excerpt from the March edition follows:

Q: It has been said that investors are now showing their willingness to consider opportunities in the Egyptian real estate sector. How would you describe these investors?

BLUMBERG: I'd describe those investors as leading edge, and leading-edge investors success is key to attracting the larger mainstream companies and investors. It's this increase in economic activity that gets the real estate economy going as well.

We see long-term opportunities in quality office development, retail and residential projects. In the short term we see very considerable opportunity in the industrial and warehouse sectors. There is tremendous built-up demand for warehousing at ports, free zones and in the new projects being contemplated in the economic plan known as the Nahda, or Renaissance Plan.

These are more than just words, as we are preparing now to commit to a large scale investment in Egypt in this sector and to move to expand our manufacturing business with construction of a manufacturing plant and export hub in Egypt. The Hub will employ 1,000 Egyptians and potentially increase Egyptian exports by $6 billion (LE 40.39 billion) and the country's GDP by 2.2%.

We have faith in Egypt and in our working with government leadership see a very strong and decisive effort to generate and support economic development projects like ours. As long as this continues we are optimistic about prospects for Egypt.

Blumberg Grain in the News

Blumberg Grain was featured in an article titled Blumberg Grain Makes Ghana A Finalist For West African Manufacturing Hub published by The Investor yesterday. The article makes note of an impending investment decision to possibly locate a multi-million dollar Manufacturing Plant and Export Hub in Ghana by Blumberg Grain. An excerpt:

If Ghana is selected, the Blumberg Grain Hub would employ over 1,000 Ghanaians, generate USD 1.25 billion in sales/export, increasing Ghana's GDP by 3 percent, and house an agricultural institute that provides programming on best practices in agricultural development.

Blumberg's investment will make the winning country the major agribusiness center in the sub-continent. Ghana is in contention with sister African economies, but Blumberg's CEO, Philip Blumberg, said he was impressed with Ghanaian Minister of Food and Agriculture, Mr. Kwesi Ahoi's response, with whom he had personal contact during his 5-day visit.

Mr. Blumberg noted, "Minister Ahwoi has passion, an understanding of the business of agriculture, and a strong desire to see Ghana transformed into a vibrant and critical agricultural commune. Blumberg Grain to Establish Manufacturing Hub for High-Tech Grain Storage Systems in West Africa

Site selection under way; Hub country to serve US$6.3 billion West African Market.

U.S.-based Blumberg Grain, a global provider of high-tech, vertically integrated crop and food storage systems, today announced plans to build a first-of-its-kind manufacturing plant and export hub in West Africa. The investment is expected to create more than 1,000 jobs and generate exports of more than US$1.25 billion for the selected host country. Blumberg Grain said Ghana, Nigeria and Namibia are among the locations it is considering.

Blumberg Grain plans to choose its business partners and hub site by the first quarter of 2013 and begin production during the latter half of next year, as part of its global strategy to open such hubs worldwide.

Once established, the West African hub will supply the region with state-of-the-art warehouses and inventory management systems, and food stock management and commodities exchange platforms.

Blumberg Grain's patent pending technology is designed to stem a widening global problem: volatile food supplies due to post-harvest losses of grain, produce, and other perishables. In parts of the world, post-harvest losses have reached a staggering 60 percent. Blumberg Grain's innovative food storage and preservation systems can help cut field and post-harvest losses to less than five percent.

"The selection process for the manufacturing plant and export hub has been under way for several months, and we have had a very high level of interest from many West African countries," said Philip Blumberg, chairman and chief executive of Blumberg Capital Partners.

"Our hub provides a significant advantage over competitors, including companies from China, who tend to source labor and materials only from their home countries. We make a commitment to local employment and training, as well as to working with local companies for steel supply, logistics and engineering services, significantly increasing the hub country's GDP."

Blumberg Grain's manufacturing plant and export hub will initially produce 1,200 warehouses annually. Demand for such technology in the West African region is estimated to be a US$6.3 billion opportunity.
"Our warehouses are both cost efficient and technologically scalable," said Christian Rath, senior vice president of Blumberg Grain. "Each warehouse, for example, can be linked electronically to sophisticated inventory-management systems and global commodities exchanges, enabling countries and commercial enterprises to remotely track their food supplies and take advantage of peak market pricing conditions."

The warehouses are pre-fabricated to be the fastest to deploy in the world. Easily transportable, they can be quickly moved to rural areas to mitigate on-farm post-harvest losses. When erected together in regional centers, the warehouses also can act as large grain and produce terminals, improving the safety and security of the food stores of multi-national enterprises and sovereign state governments.

Blumberg Grain's offerings include a self-contained bulk system that beats traditional steel grain silos on the basis of cost, quality of storage and safety of operations. The system hermetically seals grain in customized containers that hold up to 1.5 tons of grain each. The containers do not require fumigation, eliminating the need to apply toxic chemicals. Such storage eliminates 100 percent of pests that are a major cause of grain damage, according to a 2012 study by Iowa State University.

Philip Blumberg on CNBC Squawk Box 5/26/11

Investment in Real Estate is Investment in Commodities

Commodity pricing has a huge effect on commercial property prices and commodity prices help to drive up the price of office real estate, Philip Blumberg, founder and Chairman, Blumberg Capital Partners told CNBC. Western markets were also still oversupplied in terms of housing compared to emerging markets, he added.
